It is an example of prairie school landscape architecture and has been listed both on the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark.

The pool had originally been intended as a haven for imported tropical water lilies, yet was transformed by the work of noted landscape architect Alfred Caldwell in the 1930s into a natural green space perfect for relaxation and contemplation.

Visitors will find the consistent Chicago breeze soothing as they relax and let the weight of the world slowly lift from their shoulders along the water banks. The spot is exceptionally peaceful at the onset of fall, when the leaves have begun to turn and the cool temperatures create a crisp air that puts the mind at ease.
