Workplace stress is a larger part of today's society than ever before. Many workers now report feeling extremely burdened by their work-related anxiety. Now, new research shows that this may be taking a serious toll on the mental health of employees.

Researchers from Concordia University, studying workers in Canada, found that the number of people who now seek professional mental health for work-related stress is higher than ever before. In some especially high-stress professions, up to 26 percent of employees seek counseling.

The findings suggest that meditation techniques for stress may be more important now than ever before. Stress can lead to a number of serious health problems, like depression and heart disease. Rising rates of stressed-out workers could indicate a population that struggles with a major burden of diseases.

"Improving stressful working conditions and educating workers on stress-coping mechanisms could help to reduce health care costs," said Sunday Azagba, who led the study. "Managing workplace stress can also foster other economic advantages, such as increased productivity among workers, reduce absenteeism and diminish employee turnover."

Businesses may also consider offering their workers inspirational stories about teamwork to help provide a support system for workers who are struggling with heavy stress burdens. This may play an important role in supporting the mental health of employees.

It is almost an inescapable fact of life these days that professional responsibilities will cause stress. However, using meditation techniques for stress can help individuals get over the most damaging aspects of anxiety and live a more fulfilled life. This may also enable individuals to avoid needing to visit mental health professionals due to their stress.
