From Ilchi Lee’s book The Twelve Enlightenments

One of the most common questions I get asked during a lecture is, “How can I become enlightened?” Or, “How can I become a Master?” In the general parlance, a Master can most easily be translated into someone who has attained a mental and spiritual mastery of oneself. They seem to be envious because they think that I have attained something that they want but don’t know how to get it. The unfortunate thing is that I have nothing to tell them, for there is no special way or method to enlightenment. Therefore, walking a path to enlightenment is an illusory exercise in futility whereby you artificially build a path and try your best to stay on it. It’s not that there is no path to enlightenment, but, more accurately, there is no distance between yourself and enlightenment across which you can build a road. Enlightenment is our natural state of being.

Dahn Yoga — why is it called “yoga”? I know some people (usually practitioners of a long-established Indian yogic tradition) get upset by the name, because Dahn is a Korean practice and doesn’t come from any of the Indian traditions. I figure, they have a lot in common, and if calling Dahn “yoga” helps more people try it and see if they enjoy or get benefit from it, then I have no problem with the company using the Indian-origin word “yoga” as part of the name. I would like to think that the goal of all these mind-body practices, no matter where they come from, is to help people improve themselves in body, mind, and spirit. What do you think?

So I think it’s obvious that the most unique and important aspect of Dahn Yoga, compared to other yoga, is the importance of ki-energy.

In fact, Dahnhak in Korean means “Study of Energy”. Maybe you could call this practice Ki-ology or Dahnology.

But this is also one of the things that people find most surprising when they begin taking classes.

For people who have practiced a lot with energy, what can you share for members who are just beginning that will help them feel comfortable and clear about the benefit of this training?

I can think of a few things. These are based on my experience and the principles of energy described by Ilchi Lee…

1- Energy is not something you have to ‘believe’ but rather something you should ‘notice’. But it is so important that you keep your mind open to new sensations, rather than being skeptical of every feeling. The most important thing is simply to relax and focus on your body. Then you will feel what’s already there.

2- Where your mind goes, energy follows. This means that it’s really important what you are focussing on, or ‘thinking about’, during class. If you want to feel energy you need to practice keeping your mind on one thing. It’s like using a magnifying glass to start a fire from sunlight- you have to hold it still for a while in order to spark a flame.

3- Where energy goes, your blood will flow. This is why it’s important to be aware of your body’s energy! When you feel energy you can begin to direct the healing processes that occur thanks to blood circulation through your body.

4- Energy is not magic and it is not religious and you never have to pretend to feel energy if you’re not sure. But check yourself… are you really giving an honest chance to this practice? If you’re having a hard time feeling energy, don’t spend too much time judging what the instructor is or isn’t doing. Focus on yourself. Where’s your mind? It all depends on your focus, and it’s not easy. That’s why it’s a practice. But it is truly worth developing your awareness of energy!

Anybody else want to share?

I think a lot of people wonder about ‘healing’. Like, what’s the difference between massage and ‘healing’? Or is healing something real or just something that you have to ‘believe’ in order to get benefits?

When I started taking Dahn Yoga classes and one of the instructors put her hands on my feet, I really didn’t know what she was doing. It helped me feel my feet, and her hands were surprisingly warm, but actually I was too anxious to pay attention to class while she was there.

Later I received healing and actually began to practice healing. At first I went back and forth between ‘feeling something’ and just going through the motions. Little by little my confidence, awareness, and appreciation for energy healing have grown as I have learned to trust my instincts and give my 100% sincere effort to help through healing.

I went to Sedona to study at the Dahn Healer School. What I learned there was mostly just to pay attention to myself. My body knows how to heal, I just have to relax and let it do its thing.

Anyone else want to share about energy healing?
